Backing Material and Coating Composition:
Duct Tape (cloth-based tape) is primarily composed of strong cotton or synthetic fiber fabric as its backing material, covered with a rubber-based pressure-sensitive adhesive. Masking Tape, on the other hand, typically uses paper or film materials, with an acrylic or rubber-based adhesive surface.
Color and Waterproofing Performance:
Duct Tape usually uses a gray or silver polyester film coating, offering excellent water and moisture resistance. Masking Tape is commonly yellow paper tape, with weaker waterproofing, relying mainly on the barrier properties of the paper itself.
Texture and Tearability:
Duct Tape has a dense and smooth surface texture, suitable for stretching and strong adhesion. Masking Tape has a softer surface, is easy to tear by hand, and has a thinner back coating for easy peeling.
Differences in Adhesion Performance and Durability
Adhesion Strength:
Duct Tape uses a high-viscosity rubber-based pressure-sensitive adhesive, possessing extremely strong adhesion and forming a stable bond on various rough surfaces (such as metal, wood, and plastic). Masking Tape has relatively weaker adhesion and is mainly used on smooth or flat surfaces.
Durability and Longevity:
Duct Tape has extremely high abrasion resistance and tear resistance, able to withstand stretching and friction for extended periods. Masking Tape is mainly used for temporary work, such as masking paint edges, and is prone to aging, cracking, or residue over time.
Climate Adaptability:
Duct Tape maintains its adhesiveness in high or low temperature environments and is moisture- and water-resistant. Masking Tape's adhesiveness rapidly decreases in extreme weather conditions (such as strong light and humidity).
Differences in Applicable Scenarios and Usage Effects
Repair and Fixing:
Duct Tape, with its superior adhesion and durability, is primarily used for pipe repairs, securing heavy objects, and emergency sealing—occurring situations requiring high-strength fixation. Masking Tape, on the other hand, is used for wire bundling or temporary marking, where load-bearing requirements are extremely low.
Packaging and Protection:
Duct Tape, due to its waterproof and moisture-proof properties, is suitable for outdoor packaging and item protection. Masking Tape is mostly used for indoor packaging or marking.
Cost and Economy:
Due to the material difference, Masking Tape is less expensive and suitable for large-area, low-requirement operations. Duct Tape is relatively more expensive but offers higher quality assurance.
